Introduction to SEO and why it matters for adult models

You may have heard of the term Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), and I have talked about it very briefly in previous blog posts. If your eyes glaze over at the thought of this online marketing strategy, you are not the only one! There is a lot of content online regarding SEO, and it can be tricky to work out how it is relevant to you. In this post, I will explain what SEO is, why it matters and how to start optimising your online content so that it can be found by your target audience.

WHAT IS SEO?

The what of SEO is in its name: optimising your content so that search engines like it and push it to more of your target audience. SEO applies primarily to websites, but it is becoming more integrated with social media platforms and websites you post your content on and use as sales platforms. People use the internet to find things they are looking for, and that spans a very broad range of categories, including adult content.

Google uses a very complex algorithm to sort the results that it returns for people using its search engine. When starting out trying to understand SEO, the primary thing to keep in mind is that Google ranks its content according to quality and relevance to whatever a user types into the search bar. It judges a piece of content’s quality in several different ways, including the number of sites that link to a page and to the website itself, how long visitors stay scrolling and the unique content on the page. Unsurprisingly, Google ranks poor quality and spammy content low, as many other website algorithms do. When it comes to relevance, Google mainly does this by crawling the page to see how many keywords directly and indirectly relate to the users’ search. This is why you may hear people say that keywords relating to your content are so important to pin down; they are vital for people looking for your content to find you.

WHY IS SEO IMPORTANT?

I have briefly explained why SEO is important, but you may think, “I don’t have a website, so it doesn’t apply to me.” (Check out my piece on why you need to consider a website if you do not have one yet. Hopefully, I can help convince you!). Websites aside, you will have an online presence of some sort, and SEO is becoming integrated into more and more platforms, including social media. Social media marketing experts are starting to realise that people use platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and X (formerly known as Twitter) as search engines to find products and services they are looking for. It has been noticed that these platforms are adjusting their algorithm to sort content in terms of SEO principles of quality and relevance, including a much heavier focus on keywords and how long users stay looking at a particular piece of content.

Therefore, even if you do not have a website, if you use social media or any online platform, a basic understanding of SEO is imperative. It will power up your content, making it appealing to the algorithm and reaching more of your target audience.

HOW DO YOU BUILD SEO?

Building strong SEO begins with understanding how SEO works, and hopefully, this post has started you on this journey. There are many free online resources which can help you develop this further. The next important step with optimising your content so that search engines love it relates to keywords. Keywords need to be relevant, accurate and resonate with your target audience. Identifying keywords should be part of your overall marketing strategy, as you need to become really clear about what your brand is, what you create and who your audience is. And this is a huge topic, which I will explore in future posts.
