Content Creation vs Camming

Although many adult models will use a strategy combining content creation and camming in their work, they are very different activities. Each requires an individualised skillset and comes along with its associated pros and cons. In this two-part series, we will dive into and explore each, allowing you to get a sense of their upsides but also their downsides. Let’s start by talking about the pros and cons of content creation.

CONTENT CREATION – THE UPSIDES

One of the big pros of content creation is being able to work at your own time and pace. For many of us who come to this industry, the flexibility it allows us is a huge drawcard. We can make content at any time of the day or night and whatever days through the week suit us best. If you need to balance other commitments, such as family or health, this flexibility is priceless. Although it may be a little less flexible if you need to work with others (co-stars or photographers/videographers), you are only constrained by the schedules of those you choose to work with.

In content creation, you get to make content that you enjoy. There are an unlimited number of niches in the adult industry that are popular and profitable, and you can hone in on what you really enjoy. Although certain segments of the audience may not enjoy the niche you select, the fact remains that there will be people who do. Safe for work (SFW) and not safe for work (NSFW) categories share this, which makes content creation a great opportunity to really hone in on things that excite and inspire you.

Speaking of honing in on niches, that is another pro of content creation. Even if you think a niche is super obscure without much interest, if you get excited about it, I guarantee that there is a fanbase that gets inspired by it, too. This can provide direction and structure if that is something you seek in your work life. Focussing on a niche and making content to fill that niche is fulfilling in several ways, including productivity, consistency and stretching your creativity to come up with unique ways of presenting each niche.

CONTENT CREATION – THE DOWNSIDES

Naturally, there are downsides to content creation. Once you start doing it for any period, you will come up against the arduous tasks of content tracking, release and promotion of content. Making sure you keep track of what you are making and where it is released may seem optional, but once you get to a certain point, the sheer volume of what you have created will become overwhelming. If you are not keeping track of what you have made, you run the risk of duplicating and losing content, contributing to a waste of time and resources. Releasing, uploading, and promoting the content you have made is a huge part of content creation and while it helps to have a promotion schedule and strategy, issues such as slow upload speeds, sites being down, and changes in consumer habits can play havoc with you getting your stuff out there and seen.

These days, you can start camming with a mobile phone, and it can be argued that you could do the same for content creation. However, you will quickly find that a mobile phone does not have the capability to do all the tasks needed for content creation. Start-up costs for content creation are not limited to camera and sound-capturing technology but include devices and programs for editing. Consumers expect a certain level of production in what they buy, and lighting, sets and editing software are all costs that need to be factored into any creator’s set up.

Similarly, the time investment for content creation is high. While you have the flexibility to complete your work when it suits you, this does not cancel out the sheer amount of time it takes to complete the work. From capturing the raw footage/images to editing to creating thumbnails, teasers, and promotional material, you are looking at potential hours of work before you even get to the upload and release stage. Although it can be argued that this time will shrink as you get a good workflow in place and become skilled at the craft, there will always be an amount of time that you will need to invest in producing a quality product.

Next time, we will look at the pros and cons of one of the most popular types of adult entertainment: camming.
