Getting Started with Strap-Ons: Beginner-Friendly Tips and Advice

Strap-ons! Fun for all, and all for fun! These wonderful tools have many uses, but where do I begin? How do I shop for one? How do I know I will like it? When branching into the world of strap-ons, there are a lot of questions you should be thinking of; after all, you want a product you will have fun with for the long haul, right? Testing out toys and accessories is part of the fun for many, and I agree! However, suppose you are not looking to waste money on a product you end up stuffing into a closet. In that case, I suggest doing a little research first to see your options. Who knows? This research may also open some new doors to previously unexplored kinks for you!

First, picking out a strap-on to use can be overwhelming. So many styles, sizes, materials and so on. Personally, I am a fan of the type that allows you to put any toy you like in the harness. There are also several brands that have attached toys already; some you can switch out, some you can’t. The reason I prefer the open ring harness is not only for toy preference but for easy cleaning as well. These items can get a little pricey, especially when you start venturing into the more high-end products such as leather. In my opinion, the nylon and fabric versions do work. However, the quality and durability of a real leather harness are worth the price. Now, this may differ based on brand and production quality, but in the past, the non-leather options I have tried have deteriorated much faster and tend to be more uncomfortable overall. Keeping in mind the cleaning and care instructions per item, a quality product will certainly stand up to the test of time and be much more “bang for the buck” in the long run.

The other benefit I’ve noticed over the years is that cleaning a leather harness is much easier. Yes, you will need (and should want) to clean the actual harness. With the kind of fun that’s being bad with these items, you tend to stay out in the splash zone (lube, squirt, etc.), and that is not something you want to leave on your toys afterwards. I will admit, it is a lot more fun to purchase these wonderful toys in person as that allows you to feel and see the product before bringing it home (obviously), but you can not deny the endless sea of items that can be found shopping online. It is very easy to receive a product that does not accurately represent the description, so make sure when you are browsing that you are reading reviews and checking on the quality when possible before pulling out your credit card.

After you have chosen your perfect fit, the fun can begin! Whatever your prerogative, carefully sporting your strap-on with patience and care is important. If you do not have experience making those motions on a regular basis, fair warning, you may feel like leg day got to you a bit after. In whatever you are doing, it is important to go slow at first, feel what you are doing and listen to your partner. Wearing something that you can not actually feel with can cause some hiccups here and there while you are getting used to it. If you happen to be using said strap-on for anal, and you are brand new to the giving side, you may want to do a little research first. This will not only make it more fun but help prevent some uncomfortable situations that could arise. If you have gone with an open-ring device, you have the advantage of being able to start with whichever toy you like! Giving it a test run never hurts either; yes, I said test run! Feel it out, see what you like and what you don’t. It’s all in the spirit of fun!

Proper care for your toys should always be practised. This is no different. Cleaning your dildos after and giving the strap-on a good rub down with at least some warm water will help maintain the item’s integrity and allow it to last much longer. Besides, the last thing you want in the heat of the moment is to put on your harness and get half-dried lube all over you from the previous encounter. You can also use a strap-on in solo content! Stroking it, teasing with it, the possibilities are vast! No matter what kind of hole you will be penetrating, take it slow, pick the toy of your liking, and practice, practice, practice! If a thrust is not a natural motion for you, it will feel awkward at first, but it happens! Over time, you will get into the swing of things and find a natural motion. No matter what you choose to do with your new toy, always remember to stay safe, stay hydrated, and have fun!
