How the pandemic shifted the NSFW industry

2020 threw us all for a loop in one way or another. Some began their virtual commute to work, which has stuck through today; some picked up new hobbies, started some home improvement projects (some of us actually finished them), and so on. One of the more noticeable aspects (to us, at least!) was how many people began creating content as either a supplemental side hustle or even just for fun with their newfound free time at home! We didn’t realize how the pandemic shifted the NSFW industry. The point is, today, we have more creators of all kinds than ever. What does this mean?

On the one hand, it means that, with the added variety, it’s more challenging to stand out from the ever-growing sea of people trying to get noticed. On the other hand, it is truly normalizing our craft in a very big way! Of course, the ups and downs on the big scale have impacted us, but what about on a more personal level? What did we go through and experience as far as our business happenings? We all noticed the change. Slower goal shows on cam, banks that happen to all start hating us at once, new regulations as a result, and more. Our industry as a whole went through some major changes. As important as the big picture is, the pieces are also vital!

Prior to the pandemic, it seemed much more common for people to spend more money in bigger ways. This may be the most obvious statement ever and, honestly, is not exclusive to the world of content selling and creation. Getting a nice “whale” tipper in every now and then was less unusual to make your day. Now, for some, this still happens, which is great! But for most, the hopes of goal-clearing token throwing have been much more scarce. To balance this out, however, there has been an ever-growing increase of “microtransactions” that just keep growing! This includes pre-made videos, subscription platforms, and so on (check out our blog on microtransactions). Now, this might seem lackluster in comparison, but the truth of the matter is that the pool of members in that group keeps on growing at a rapid rate! This was (and still is!) a fantastic reason to explore some new platforms to add to your tool bag, which many of us did!

"ON THE ONE HAND, IT MEANS THAT, WITH THE ADDED VARIETY, IT'S MORE CHALLENGING TO STAND OUT FROM THE EVER-GROWING SEA OF PEOPLE TRYING TO GET NOTICED. ON THE OTHER HAND, IT IS TRULY NORMALIZING OUR CRAFT IN A VERY BIG WAY!"

Checking out the different options and what’s offered on each can bring you a lot of new eyes to your product and also new possibilities to achieve these goals. This was a saving grace for many of us. People were home more; they explored more, and they fit it into their budgets in a way that supported us but also didn’t break the bank. With the many additional members and the more frequent smaller transactions from existing members, we can say that leveling out the goal clearing was indeed possible. Sure, this took some extra work upfront. Making the extra videos, taking a few extra pics for posting, or even some extra shorter private shows. The pandemic hit us all differently, but for many of us, our wallets were the hardest and most consistent hit. Keeping up with the microtransaction demand continues to this day to be a tried and true road to success. This isn’t saying you aren’t still going to get any more jaw-dropping tips, but planning your schedule around the smaller purchases will make those bad boys sweeter!

Models, models everywhere! The sheer amount of creators of all kinds skyrocketed during 2020 and has shown no signs of slowing down. People home more looking for a work-from-home side hustle, a creative outlet, or even just the sheer boredom of there being absolutely nothing to do, so they started a little adventure. Again, the downside to this is that it’s been increasingly more challenging to stay afloat and still be noticeable enough to actually make sales. However, the much more positive light this has shown us is that it has made this industry much more visible for all assorted types of adults. It’s normalizing, and yet still very exciting! Some who were already in the know ventured to full-time cam/creation and left their 9-5 behind. Some discovered that they loved working from home and having the flexibility to manage their day-to-day with more ease. Some even added it to their existing work-from-home job. We all did it differently. So although we have more and more competition out there, keeping up on consistency and your marketing campaigns will prove fruitful every time. Keep in mind that we all found this industry for our own reasons, and so has everyone else! These same reasons (and then some!) are why we have many more creators in our community and many more members!

All in all, the pandemic absolutely sucked for many reasons. But for content creation in general, I believe that we slid through the last few years generally un-scathed in the demand for the content department, at the very least. The platforms we worked on supported us and kept us going through thick and thin. Our members continued to be wonderful, and we gained many new ones. We made new friends, new goals and gained a brand new outlook on what we want our lives to be. It was a very difficult time for many, physically, financially, and mentally. This continues to take much effort on all of our parts to continue to move forward. We banded together like we never had before in most aspects of our lives, not just our online lives. It changed us all for better and also for worse. Everyone is different, and everyone had different experiences. At the end of the day, this amazing spa box we have to stand on did not let us down. It simply changed! The best option still to this day is to just keep moving forward. Utilize the tools you have in front of you and explore all of your options. Giving yourself the cushion of variety in this business is important, and it kept many of us going through the last few years.
