09 Dec Moving from Twitter to Bluesky

If there’s one sure thing about sex work, both online and in-person, it’s that we frequently have to adapt and change our advertising and marketing strategies. With social media, we’re always keeping up with trends and trying to stay on our algorithm’s good side, but sometimes, we get to dive into a new platform that has survived its initial launch and started to gain popularity. Alternatives to Twitter/X as an NSFW platform have been limited but sorely needed as it has spiralled into a bot-filled cesspool of spam and hate speech. Thankfully, we’ve been graced with a fresh, new place for us to grow with. Enter Bluesky, the rapidly growing alternative to Twitter!
Getting the hang of a new platform sucks; we’re all busy, and dedicating time to figure out features and user interfaces is really inconvenient. Bluesky makes it a little easier on us, though. Some of the nice, basic features are custom feeds, starter packs, and block lists. You can basically follow a bunch of accounts in areas that interest you all at once, as well as mass block accounts that have certain keywords you choose in their bio or feed. You can even build your own starter packs for other people to use, and the block function is actually useful for…blocking people, unlike Twitter’s.
DOES BLUESKY ALLOW NSFW?
Bluesky does allow NSFW content and gives you the option to moderate your posts on your own. You can choose between suggestive, nudity, adult, or graphic media. The moderation team will do it on their own if you forget to, and users can choose to show or hide NSFW media in their settings. Bluesky also encourages links in your main post, so you don’t have to drop them in the comments to try and avoid the algorithm knocking you down in your follower’s feeds. Some people use hashtags, and some don’t. You can try it out on your own and figure out what works best for you.
Getting interaction on Bluesky follows the same general guidelines as any other platform. You’ll want to like, comment, and share other people’s content that interests you or falls into your niche. Adding alt text to your images seems to boost your post a little, as well as adding a lot more room to throw in some keywords you want to pop up in the Discover tab. And just like anywhere else, make sure your posts are interesting and engaging; putting a little extra effort into things will make people want to interact and give your posts some traction
WHAT IS THE POSTING ETIQUETTE ON BLUESKY?
People on Bluesky are really trying to make it into a platform filled with creativity and productive discussion. The user base exploded recently because folks were just done with the wild toxicity of Twitter, so etiquette on Bluesky is important. Basically, don’t feed the trolls; just block, report, and move on. Some of the most problematic Twitter accounts have joined and tried to behave like they do on Twitter just to find themselves mass-blocked and banned. Having reports actually do something is pretty nice!
Overall, Bluesky seems to have survived its infancy and looks to have a lot of potential. Having it as a space to replace Twitter is refreshing and fitting, as it began as a Twitter experiment. We can make our contributions there to help the platform grow in the right direction, and in being creators for the overall good, we can hold Bluesky to a higher standard and keep them accountable so they don’t turn into another space that was built on the backs of sex workers only to kick us off when the traffic is high enough. So, let’s all enjoy the new space and lift each other up!
